We’ve put together this guide to ABE fire extinguishers so you can decide if this is the right extinguisher for you.

ABE fire extinguishers are distinguished by a white coloured band around the top of the cylinder. These extinguishers are one of the most popular on the market. Not only are they extremely efficient on electrical fires, they are also extremely cost effective, making them a good choice in a wide variety of situations. ABE fire extinguishers can be used in numerous places – from houses to boats, garages, cars, caravans, shop fronts, offices, factories and mechanical plants, and they also work on several different fire classes.

Here’s some important information to help you determine whether an ABE Fire Extinguisher is right for you:

When is it safe to use this fire extinguisher?

The Dry Chemical ABE Fire Extinguisher can safely be used in the following fires:

  • Class A Fires

Normal combustibles such as fires involving materials such as wood, paper, cloth and textiles, plastics or rubber products

  • Class B Fires

Fires involving combustible liquids such as petrol, oil paint, alcohol and solvents

  • Class E Fires

Fires where the ignition source contains electrical equipment such as motors, switchboards and electrical appliances.

When should I avoid using this fire extinguisher?

The 4.5kg Dry Chemical ABE Fire Extinguisher should NOT be used in the following fires:

  • Class C fires

Fires involving combustible gases such as LPG, Natural gas and acetylene

  • Class D Fires

Fires involving combustible metals such as aluminium shaving or magnesium.

How do they work?

ABE fire extinguishers are filled with the chemical powder called monoammonium phosphate, which acts as an extinguishing agent. This chemical spreads easily and melts over the flames, covers the fire and starves it of oxygen. The discharge of the dry powder in an ABE fire extinguisher also acts as a shield against radiated heat. If a large quantity of powder has been released, it also has the ability to shield and protect surrounding objects and structures from the damage of fire.

What sizes do they come in?

At Fire Equipment Online, our range of ABE extinguishers available include: 1kg, 1.5kg , 2kg, 2.5kg , 4.5kg, 9kg. The size you will need will depend on your unique needs and risks. Larger extinguishers are more powerful and provide protection in high-risk areas, but a smaller extinguisher at a lower price may be more suitable if your risk is low. How do I use one?

ABE extinguishers can be used like most kinds of fire extinguishers. One common method is the PASS technique: Pull the Pin. Aim it at the fire. Squeeze the handle. Sweep from side to side.

Don’t forget that fire extinguishers require training to use properly. Ensuring your team is equipped with fire extinguisher training is absolutely essential for the safety and wellbeing of each and every person who sets foot on your premises.
